The Muse: An Original Musical
About THE MUSE
The Muse follows the story of Joey, a musician hoping to make it big, and Gavin, his partner in crime and the voice of reason in his life. After making a deal with the Showrunner, Joey encounters the seven deadly sins, portrayed as occupations within the corrupt side of the music industry. He must decide what matters more: fame, or staying true to what he loves — making music. It’s a story of forgiveness, unconditional love and staying true to your muse. And for me, that’s unapologetically Jesus Christ.
This show began with a prophetic dream I had in December 2020. I woke up at 3 a.m. and knew I was supposed to write a musical about the seven deadly sins. I had always been a songwriter, but I had never taken on a challenge as extensive as completing a full-length musical. I teamed up with Andrew McBurnie and Sam Durnil, two of my closest friends from college, who lived in the theater world and were among the most talented people I had ever met. After performing a showcase version at Olivet Nazarene University in April 2021, we were given the green light to produce a full version of The Muse the following spring.
When we debuted the show in ONU’s black box theater in March 2022, the audience’s tears and the messages we received afterward painted a clear picture: this show was bigger than we had imagined. We realized we needed to keep it alive. We developed a missional mindset of accessibility, wanting this story to reach as many people as possible — for free. We knew we needed a high-quality film to achieve that goal.
After fundraising efforts, we returned to the black box theater in May 2023 for a professional 10-day film shoot. Over the next year, we focused on editing, album production, pitching and many long hours alone in the studio. Today, it’s ready for you to experience.
This show was always meant to live on stage, and our prayer is that it will continue to be performed. Until then, we’re proud to offer the highest-quality digital version we could create. We know how much this show meant to those who saw it live — and we certainly know how much it means to us.
